The September 18 Incident, also known as the Fengtian Incident or the Liutiaohu Incident, occurred on September 18, 1931, when the Japanese Kwantung Army stationed in Northeast China suddenly attacked Shenyang and occupied the Northeast by force. It marked the beginning of Japanese imperialism's attempt to conquer China by force, and also signaled the starting point of the World Anti-Fascist War, opening the prelude to the Eastern theater of World War II.
On the night of September 18, 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army, stationed in Northeast China, carried out a carefully plotted scheme. Railway "guard units" dynamited a section of the South Manchuria Railway near Liutiaohu in Shenyang—railway tracks built by the Japanese themselves—and falsely blamed the Chinese military. Using this as a pretext, the Japanese forces bombarded the Beidaying Camp of the Chinese Northeast Army, creating the shockingly infamous "September 18 Incident." The following day, the Japanese troops occupied Shenyang and subsequently seized the three northeastern provinces. By February 1932, the entire Northeast had fallen. Thereafter, Japan established the puppet regime of Manchukuo in Northeast China, beginning 14 years of enslavement and colonial rule over the people of the Northeast, subjecting more than 30 million compatriots to the bitter suffering of life under a subjugated nation.
